Chapter Eight

Caleb realized something important after Donna left and he cleaned up the dream cabin, then drove back to his own place to get ready for the day’s work.

Donna, who’d always moved so fast in the city, really did need a slow touch when it came to matters of the heart.

But if she and he had gone a little too quickly last night, he certainly didn’t regret it. Nope, he firmly believed that what he needed to do now was persuade her that it wasn’t just sex that she wanted.

He wouldn’t even let it bother him that she had taken off like a shot as soon as dawn had hit the sky.

Actually, that did bug him a little. She’d been jumpy as hell, as if... Had she dreamed in that feather bed last night, just like in all the family legends?

Nah. He didn’t want to jump to conclusions. After all, Caleb himself had slept like a rock, so he still didn’t believe all those magical tales. He didn’t need any supposedly charmed mattress to give him dreams when he already knew what they were: to make Donna Byrd see that he was the one for her.

And he stuck to that theory as he arrived at the stables, where Hugh asked Caleb to deviate in his regular schedule for the time being. The foreman left J.D. with the horses—a job that had belonged to Caleb for about fifteen years now—and had Caleb work only on the cattle side of the operation today, just as he’d done back when he’d been new on the ranch.

No horses. No setting his own schedule.

Hugh didn’t explain his reasons while he performed maintenance on ditches and pipes with the hands until lunch, and Caleb didn’t ask.

At the midday meal, he ran into J.D. in line for the pork chops, potatoes and grilled vegetables.

Caleb greeted Jenna’s fiancé, then said, “If I didn’t know better, I’d say Hugh’s giving my old job to you. I was always the horse guy around here.”

“I heard you grew up doing a little of everything on this ranch. You started out with the cattle, right?”

“Until Tex asked me to personally maintain his stables. I know we’ve added to them lately, but...”

J.D. smiled. “You don’t think that Hugh’s getting ready to retire soon and he’s gearing up to groom you as the foreman?”

It’d occurred to Caleb, but he didn’t want that to happen sooner rather than later. “Hugh’s got a lot of good years left in him.”

“Who knows?” As they sat at a bench, J.D. nudged back his hat, revealing some of his short, dark hair. “Change is in the air here, and not just with Hugh. There also seems to be a lot of pheromones floating around the Flying B lately and throwing a lot of curves to the personnel.”

From the teasing glint in his brown eyes, he was referring to last night and how Caleb had driven Donna home from Lone Star Lucy’s.

Caleb sat down, too. “I think I should be pretending that I have no idea what you’re talking about.
